About Chandrapur Ferro Alloy Plant
Chandrapur Ferro Alloy Plant (CFP), Maharashtra
Chandrapur Ferro Alloy Plant (CFP) is a strategic unit of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). Located in Chandrapur, Maharashtra, CFP is the only Public Sector Unit engaged in production of Manganese based Ferro Alloys in the Country. Therefore, CFP plays a pivotal role in strengthening India’s steel-making capabilities through self-reliant and cost-effective ferro alloy production.
Historical Background
Established in 1974 as Maharashtra Elektrosmelt Limited (MEL), the plant began as a joint venture between the Government of Maharashtra and SICOM. In 1986, it was taken over by SAIL and later merged as a full-fledged unit in 2011. CFP has since evolved into a centre of excellence in ferro alloy manufacturing. CFP primarily caters to the Ferro Alloys’ requirement of Integrated Steel Plants’ of SAIL namely BSP, BSL, DSP, RSP, ISP and other plants/units like ASP, SSP & VISP and Private Vendors.
Location:
CFP is located 166 km from Nagpur on the Delhi–Chennai rail route, and is well connected by rail and road to major cities across India. The plant is uniquely set in lush green surroundings, offering an eco-friendly industrial environment and contributing to sustainable operations.
Infrastructure and Facilities
CFP boasts a comprehensive array of facilities designed to produce a wide range of ferro alloys:
- Submerged Electric Arc Furnaces: Two 33 MVA (Elkem) and One 45MVA (Tenova Pyromet) furnaces dedicated to the production of Silico Manganese. It also has the facility to produce High Carbon Ferro Manganese.
- Electric Arc Furnace: A 1 MVA furnace for producing medium and low carbon ferro manganese.
- Manganese Ore Sintering Plants: Two units that enhance the efficiency of raw material utilization.
- Furnace Gas-Based Power Plant: Utilizes furnace off-gases to generate power, promoting energy efficiency.
- Mechanized Crushing and Screening System: Ensures uniform sizing of ferro alloy products.
- Lime Calcination and Manganese Ore Roasting Units: Facilitate the preparation of raw materials for alloy production.
These modern facilities are supported by efficient raw material handling systems and automated control rooms. This enables CFP to produce ferro alloys with precise chemical compositions and mechanical properties, tailored to specific customer requirements.
Product Portfolio
The product range of CFP includes Silico Manganese (SiMn), High Carbon Ferro-Manganese (HCFeMn) and Medium Carbon Ferro-Manganese. CFP has an installed capacity of 1,30,000 Tons of Silico Manganese (SiMn)/ 1,72,500 Tons per annum of High Carbon Ferro-Manganese ((HCFeMn)
